Reading
Reading Lessons
Guided Reading is a high priority at Fulfen and is taught as a whole class. Throughout the school, Guided Reading lessons take place focused around a text that children would not normally select themselves and can find links between. A sequence of Guided Reading lessons encompass the different reading domains: vocabulary, inference, prediction, sequencing, retrieval, summary and explanation. If you were to walk into a Fulfen Primary School reading lesson, you could find yourselves immersed in a modern-day pop song; a classic war poem; a non-fiction text about spiders; or a journey into Narnia.
How to help your child
The best way you can help your child with reading is to engage with reading regularly at home; whether this is listening to them reading a book, sharing a book with them or reading them a bed-time story. Just make sure it's an enjoyable time and celebrate their successes with them.

Accelerated Reader
We use the Accelerated Reading scheme from Year 2 to Year 6, which has a proven track record of raising the enjoyment of reading.
After completing a book, children will take a test on that book and their score is recorded on their Accelerated Reader account. This will record the number of words read over time and children will receive certificates for landmarks of words read. Look out for your certificate!
Fulfen Library
Our exciting new library opened in the Spring term 2022. This allows children at Fulfen to access an even greater range of books at Fulfen. Our pupil librarians look forward to recommending their favourite books and will be running book clubs during lunch times. In using our school library, children will gain the skills to use their other libaries.
