Year 1 2020 - 2021

Welcome to Year 1 2020-2021!

The Year 1 team is Mrs Barber, Mrs Owen, Miss Marriott and Miss Atkinson. We have had a fabulous start to the year and are so incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into Year 1. Well done!

Autumn 1 Topic- Dinosaur Planet

Rrrrrooaarrrrrrrr!!!!! Our first topic in the Autumn term will be 'Dinosaur Planet' and we have lots of exciting activities planned! Dinosaur Planet | Year 1 History | KS1 | Cornerstones Education

At the bottom of the page you will find a file called'Dinosaur Planet Info for Parents'. Please open this file to find out about all of the amazing things we will be exploring and learning this half term.

Please see the attached timetable for further information about lessons.

The children will have PE on Wednesdays and will need to come to school dressed in their kit on this day.

  • White t-shirt and black shorts;
  • Additional navy sweatshirt and navy tracksuit bottoms for outdoor PE;
  • Trainers;
  • In extremely cold weather, extra layers such as under-layers, hats and gloves are permissible as long as the activity can be carried out safely in these (a staff member will advise the children appropriately).Department of P.E and Dance | Denny High School

Hair and Jewellery:

  • No jewellery (including fitness bands) should be worn for PE;
  • Earrings should be removed and not taped over;
  • Long hair must be tied back.

On non-PE days, full school uniform should be worn. No trainers or branded shoes please - smart school shoes only.

From September, we regret that we will not be able to provide snack for the majority of children. Please can the children therefore bring a healthy snack for breaktime. Healthy Snack Cliparts - Cliparts ZoneRemember, it must be nut free due to allergies. Please can the children also bring a water bottle every day.

Classroom equipment

Due to the current situation, we are asking you to leave pencil cases at home. Children will be provided with suitable equipment for their individual use.

Please check the reading and writing standards attachments to see what your child will be aiming to do during Year 1.

We now teach Power Maths, which is based around four characters the children can relate to. During lessons, we have a whole-class discussion while we “Discover” a practical, real-life problem; then the children “Share” their ideas by exploring Power Maths - the whole-class mastery approach that works for every child - YouTubedifferent methods; and, finally, they “Practise”, working independently in their books, following small steps of progression carefully designed to deepen learning.

Children are expected to:

  • Practise the Letter-join handwriting;
  • Learn their Super-Spellings from their booklet and apply these in their handwriting;
  • Read their reading book and complete the home-school record.
  • Additional, curriculum related homework may also be set as well as longer open-ended tasks/projects.

School opening times

School will be open from 8:30 to 8:55 for dropping pupils off. Year 1 children will enter the school through Miss Marriott's door (1M). They will come out at 3:20 through the same door to be collected on the KS1 playground.
