Year 1 2020 - 2021

Welcome to Burnside Primary School

2020-2021

Autumn 2

Our new topic for Autumn 2 is called 'Bright Lights, Big City'.

During this topic children will need to use their best manners and have the perfect hair as they will be invited to have tea with the Queen.

About Her Majesty The Queen - Royal.uk

Children will be learning all about our wonderful capital city London and its magnificent landmarks including the history, transport and stepping back in time to discover what happened during the Great Fire of London.

London's Burning! London's Burning!

Are you ready for the bright lights of the big city? Hop in a black cab and enjoy the ride.

PE

The children will have PE on Wednesdays and will need to come to school dressed in their kit on this day.

Kit:

  • White t-shirt and black shorts;
  • Additional navy sweatshirt and navy tracksuit bottoms for outdoor PE;
  • Trainers;
  • In extremely cold weather, extra layers such as under-layers, hats and gloves are permissible as long as the activity can be carried out safely in these (a staff member will advise the children appropriately).

Hair and Jewellery:

  • No jewellery (including fitness bands) should be worn for PE;
  • Earrings should be removed and not taped over;
  • Long hair must be tied back.

On non-PE days, full school uniform should be worn. No trainers or branded shoes please - smart school shoes only.

Snack

From September, we regret that we will not be able to provide snack for the majority of children. Please can the children therefore bring a healthy snack for breaktime. Fruit will be available for children. Healthy Snack Cliparts - Cliparts Zone

Remember, it must be nut free due to allergies (please not Nutella).

Please provide a water bottle for your children.

Classroom equipment

Due to the current situation, we are asking you to leave pencil cases at home. Children will be provided with suitable equipment for their individual use.

English

Please check the reading and writing standards attachments to see what your child will be aiming to do during Year 1.

Maths

We now teach Power Maths, which is based around four characters the children can relate to. During lessons, we have a whole-class discussion while we “Discover” a practical, real-life problem; then the children “Share” their ideas by exploring Power Maths - the whole-class mastery approach that works for every child - YouTubedifferent methods; and, finally, they “Practise”, working independently in their books, following small steps of progression carefully designed to deepen learning.

Homework

Children are expected to:

  • Practise the Letter-join handwriting;
  • Learn their Super-Spellings from their booklet and apply these in their handwriting;
  • Read their reading book and complete the home-school record.
  • Additional, curriculum related homework may also be set as well as longer open-ended tasks/projects.

School opening times

School will be open from 8:30 to 8:55 for dropping pupils off. Please follow the arrows onto the KS2 playground and the back through the gate onto the KS1 playground to avoid any clashes with oncoming traffic.

Year 1 children will enter the school through Miss Marriott's door (1M). Both classes will come out at 3:20. 1M's through the same door, but 1OB through the KS1 door.
