Year 2 2020 - 2021

WELCOME TO YEAR 2!

Our team is Miss Greenfield, Miss Ryan, Miss Westwood and Mrs Turton.

It has been so lovely to see you all back in school and a big thank you to the children and families who sent in homework. It is much appreciated!

We have a really exciting year planned.  Our first topic is ' Creepy Crawlies' where we will be learning about minibeasts, including their habitats and lifecycles.  The topic will be very practical and it will involve a lot of work outside - fingers crossed for nice weather.

iPads in Year 2

We will also be introducing the children to the Year 2 iPads.  They will get to use educational apps such as accelerated reader, number pieces, TT Rockstars, piccollage, seesaw and many more to enhance their learning experiences whilst in Year 2. The children are already becoming familar with how to access the Keynote app to successfully view their daily maths lessons and use the interactive features alongside the class teacher!

Super Spellings!

At the beginning of each academic year the children are re-tested on the spellings they've learnt previously so that as class teachers we know which spellings the children are secure with and which ones they are not. The spellings the children have written incorrectly with then go into a 'blank book' for them to re-learn. When the children have completed the 'blank book' they will then receive the correct spelling book whether that be 'Garden Book, Bee Book, Circus Book or Pelican Book'. Letter formation is imperative when spelling. Children will be tested at a minimum of every two weeks and will have the week to learn their new set.  We also encourage the children to understand the meaning of the words they are spelling and will be asked at least once what a particular word means - so please do encourage this at home too when the children are practising.

Reading

In Year 2 your child will take an 'Accelerated Reader - Star Reading Quiz'. This quiz is taken every half term and tests the children on their current reading ability. Accelerated Reader then produces a reading age and reading level for your child. Teacher judgement is still fundamental but the results from this quiz are useful indicators on your child's current reading level.

Children will then pick a book appropriate to their current level and take this home to enjoy. When your child has completed the book they take a quiz on that particular book which asks them comprehension questions. We would always recommend asking your child questions at home about the book they're reading, for example: Who is the main character? What did you think of the book? What happened on page ___? Did the story have a moral? Which character did ________?. This will help them significantly with the understanding of what they've read.

For children unable to access the Accelerated Reader(AR) scheme they will continue with Book Band Books until they're ready for AR and will be supported through the process of choosing a book they enjoy.

We recommend reading with your child every night for 10 minutes as this has a huge impact on their fluency and confidence in reading. We expect children at a minimum to change their book once a week.

Homework On Seesaw

Homework will be provided to children once a week on a Friday. They then have 1 week to complete the homework before the next piece is uploaded. All homework will be accessed via Seesaw which is the learning platform we used during lockdown. Each piece of homework has video instructions from your child's class teacher. This is to support you as parents at home but also as a reminder for the children. Please whereever possible encourage them to work independently to enable us as their teacher to see what type of support or challenge they require.

PE

PE will be with Mr Morton every Friday. Children will need to come into school wearing a smart PE kit to wear all day on those Fridays.

The children will have PE on Wednesdays and will need to come to school dressed in their kit on this day.

Kit:

  • White t-shirt and black shorts;
  • Additional navy sweatshirt and navy tracksuit bottoms for outdoor PE;
  • Trainers;
  • In extremely cold weather, extra layers such as under-layers, hats and gloves are permissible as long as the activity can be carried out safely in these (a staff member will advise the children appropriately).

Hair and Jewellery:

  • No jewellery (including fitness bands) should be worn for PE;
  • Earrings should be removed and not taped over;
  • Long hair must be tied back.

On non-PE days, full school uniform should be worn. No trainers or branded shoes please - smart school shoes only.

Snacks

Previously you will be use to your child being able to buy snacks at school. For the Autumn Term snacks will need to be provided from home, however their is access to fruit on a daily basis.  Children will also need to bring in a full water bottle each day.

Further information

During the Autum Term the children won't be able to bring in pencilcases from home.  We will provide all stationery.

School is open between 8:30am and 8:55am for drop off.  The children will enter the school through the KS1 door.  They will come out at 3:30pm through the KS1 door.
