Year 6 2020 - 2021

Welcome!

A huge welcome from Miss Ehrenmark (6E) and Miss Gardner (6G).  We are so happy to be back in school and really excited for the year ahead.

We will be regularly updating this page with news and information so come back for another visit!

Useful Information

PE

This half term PE will be on the following days:

6E - Thursday

6G - Friday

Please can you send your child into school on their PE days in Fulfen PE kit. Please also remember to send in two pairs of trainers, one that can be used outside and one for changing into.

PE Kit:

  • White T-Shirt and black or navy shorts;
  • Additional sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms for outdoor PE (plain and preferably in darker colours).  Fulfen Hoodies are only for use in PE;
  • Trainers;
  • In extremely cold weather, extra layers such as under-layers, hats and gloves are permissible as long as the activity can be carried out safely in these;

If your child is attending Mr Morton’s after school sports club but does not have PE on that day, they will need to bring in a sports kit. The children will be allowed to get changed for these clubs only.

Spelling

We will be continuing to follow the 'Super Spellings' scheme. Your child will be given individual spellings at a suitable level of challenge for them.  Spelling books must be brought into school each day, as the children could be tested on their spellings at any time.  Your children will usually be tested on 5-10 spellings at a time.  Please help them to learn the spellings. See the attached parent guide for more information.

Reading

We have really enjoyed doing the World Cup of Books to start our term and amazingly, despite lots of brilliant contenders, both classes voted overwhelmingly for the same book this term.  Both classes will be reading Crater Lake by Jennifer Killick as their reading for pleasure class reader.

Our class book for Autumn 1, to go alongside our English lessons, is the book Holes by Louis Sachar.  We would encourage children to purchase their own copy of the book to bring into school to use during lessons.

We will also be continuing with our 'Accelerated Reading' scheme this half-term. Please ensure your child is reading for at least 20 minutes a day at home and encourage them to bring in their reading book each day to read when we have spare time in class.  Please note, many of these reading books have been purchased personally by the teachers for our class reading corners because we want to share our love of reading with your children. Can we please request that these books are looked after when bought home and returned back to the book corners when finished.  Additionally, if you have any spare books at home that your children have finished with and you would be happy to donate to our classrooms, we would love to have them!

Hola Mexico!

This half term we will be learning all about Mexico. Children have already cooked up a Mexican feast of vegetarian chili and nachos and wowed us with their Mexican hat dancing.  They will be learning more about the geographical features associated with Mexico including what lives and grows in the Chihuahuan Desert. They will also be finding out about Mexican festivals including the Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo.  Finally, they will investigate what life was like for the Mayans and what similarities exist between Maya life and life in the UK today.

Reminders

Year 6 break time is now at 11am with lunch break at 12.40.  Due to these later times, children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack to have at break.  Can we also remind you that water bottles are encouraged for the classroom but should contain water and not squash/fruit juice.

Children have been provided with all the relevant stationery they need and therefore we ask you not to send in pencil cases from home.

Children are welcome to start arriving between 8.30am and 8.55am.  Children should come through Miss Gardner's door, put their belongings in their locker and wash their hands before entering their classroom.

Useful Dates

SATs week will begin on Monday 10th May.  We will send out more information nearer the time.
