At Fulfen we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the love of reading. Not only is reading a vital life skill, it provides a lifetime of pleasure. We read a range of quality texts throughout the day in all curriculum areas, as well as teaching discrete phonics and reading sessions. We read a class book at the end of each day.  Please help us to support your child begin their reading journey by reading, talking about and enjoying books every day and ensuring your child brings in their reading record book every day. Please feel free to download the library membership form that you can fill in and take to the library. It is a fantastic, free community resource for us all to use so make the most of it if you can.

Please see our suggested reading lists for inspiration and ideas and the expected reading standards for each year group.

Accelerated Reading

We have introduced the Accelerated Reading scheme from Year 2 to Year 6, which has a proven track record of raising the enjoyment of reading as well as attainment levels.

To find out more information about the program please go to:

Your child will take a STAR Reading Assessment once a half term. STAR Reading is used to determine your child’s reading level. It is a computer-based reading assessment program that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the child’s answer is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the child cannot answer a question or answers incorrectly, then the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately ten minutes. You will receive a letter every half term letting you know your child's reading age and the level (ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development) of book they should be reading to provide the correct level of challenge. They can read books outside their range but  books within their ZPD will accelerate their reading ability.

All books at school are labelled and stickered to clearly guide the children into making the best choices for them. Your child can also read books from home. To check if a book is in the Accelerated Reading program and to check its ZPD please go to:

Once your child has finished their book they will complete an online quiz at school about the book. The children will pass the quiz if they get 70% of the questions correct, however we are encouraging the children to get 100% of the questions correct.

Children reading 100,000 - 250,000 - 500,000 - 750,000 and 1 million words this year will receive a certificate and prize in assembly. Everybody wants to join the Millionaires' Club!  Children will also receive certificates for reaching their own personal reading targets.

You can keep up-to-date with your child's progress by logging into HomeConnect. A letter will be sent out to you which gives you the web address and your child's Username and Password. This is the link:

We teach writing by focusing on a particular genre of writing for a block of weeks and use a high quality text to inspire and guide the children's writing. We teach in this way to ensure the children produce one amazing piece of writing at the end of the block that they have had the opportunity to edit and improve to a high standard.  Children are challenged to improve their writing by the use of clear feedback through marking stickers.  We want all children at Fufen to be the best writer they can be. There is a greater focus on spelling rules and grammar in the new curriculum and we teach these through the daily writing lesson as well in separate lessons where this is appropriate. Please see the attached writing objectives for each year group.

Developing a fluent, cursive writing style is very important and we celebrate the progress children have made in this area through awarding red, purple, bronze, silver and gold certificates. When the children are awarded a silver certificate they can start writing using a handwriting pen and when they achieve their gold certificate they can write using a fountain pen.  We have also introduced the diamond certificate for children who are consistently producing handwriting of a high standard. To see the award criteria please see the attached sheets.

We have introduced a new handwriting scheme which you can access at home.  Please go to for handwriting practice at home and  lots of fun activities. The parent guide and information letter can be downloaded from the website.

We use the Super Spelling scheme at Fulfen. Your child will bring home a booklet with spellings individually chosen to be at the correct challenge for your child. Usually children will be learning 5 or 10 spellings at a time and will be tested on them within a 2 week period. It is vitally important that your child brings in their spelling booklet every day as spelling tests will happen throughout the week. Please support your child by helping them to learn their spellings. Please see the parent booklet for more information.

In addition to the Super Spelling scheme, we also teach spelling rule lessons.
