Reading

At Fulfen we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the love of reading.  Not only is reading a vital life skill, it provides a lifetime of pleasure.  We read a range of quality texts throughtout the day in all curriculum areas, as well as teaching discrete phonics and reading sessions every day.  Please help us to support your child begin their reading journey by reading, talking about and enjoying books every day. We have been developing links with Burntwood library and so far Year 4 and Year 6 have visited. More visits will be arranged soon.   Please feel free to download the library membership form that you can fill in and take to the library.  It is a fantastic, free community resource for us all to use so make the most of it if you can.

Please see our suggested reading lists for inspiration and ideas.

Writing

We teach writing in a cross-curricular way, with all writing activities linked to the topic or a class book. We teach in this way to make writing purposeful and exciting. Your child will learn about the features of many genres of writing including : stories, poems, newspaper reports, descriptions, letters, plays and many more.  There is a greater focus on spelling rules and grammar in the new curriculum and we teach these through the daily writing lesson as well in separate lessons.

Developing a fluent, cursive writing style is very important and we celebrate the progress children have made in this area through awarding bronze, silver and gold certifiates.  When the children are awarded a silver certificate they can start writing using a handwriting pen and when they achieve their gold certificate they can write using a fountain pen.  To see the award criteria please see the attached sheet.

Spelling

From March 2017 we will be starting the Super Spelling scheme.  Your child will bring home a booklet with spellings individually chosen to be at the correct challenge for your child.  Usually children will be learning 5 spellings at a time and will be tested on them within a 2 week period.  It is vitally important that your child brings in their spelling booklet every day as spelling tests will happen throughout the week. Please support your child by helping them to learn their spellings.   Please see the parent booklet for more information.
