Reading

At Fulfen we believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the love of reading. Not only is reading a vital life skill, it provides a lifetime of pleasure. We read a range of quality texts throughtout the day in all curriculum areas, as well as teaching discrete phonics and reading sessions every day. Please help us to support your child begin their reading journey by reading, talking about and enjoying books every day. We have been developing links with Burntwood library and Years 4, 5 and 6 visited last year. More visits are planned for this academic year. Please feel free to download the library membership form that you can fill in and take to the library. It is a fantastic, free community resource for us all to use so make the most of it if you can.

Please see our suggested reading lists for inspiration and ideas.

We have introduced the Accelerated Reading scheme from Year 2 to Year 6, which has a proven track record of raising the enjoyment of reading as well as attainment levels.

To find out more information about the program please go to:

www.renlearn.co.uk

Your child will take a STAR Reading Assessment once a half term. STAR Reading is used to determine your child’s reading level. It is a computer-based reading assessment programme that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the child’s answer is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the child cannot answer a question or answers incorrectly, then the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately ten minutes. You will receive a letter every half term letting you know your child's reading age and the level (ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development) of book they should be reading to provide the correct level of challenge. They can read books outside their range but  books within their ZPD will accelerate their reading ability.

All books at school are labelled and stickered to clearly guide the children into making the best choices for them. Your child can also read books from home. To check if a book is in the Accelerated Reading program and to check its ZPD please go to:

www.arbookfind.co.uk

Once your child has finished their book they will complete an online quiz at school about the book. The children will pass the quiz if they get 70% of the questions correct, however we are encouraging the children to get 100% of the questions correct. If they get 100% they join the '100% club' in their classroom and they will receive a certificate.

Other awards are given at a whole school level. Children reading 250,000 - 500,000 - 750,000 and 1 million words this year will receive a certificate and prize in assembly. Everybody wants to join the Millionaires' Club!

You can keep up-to-date with your child's progress by logging into HomeConnect. A letter will be sent out to you which gives you the web address and your child's Username and Password. This is the link:

Writing

We teach writing in a cross-curricular way, with all writing activities linked to the topic or a class book. We teach in this way to make writing purposeful and exciting. Your child will learn about the features of many genres of writing including : stories, poems, newspaper reports, descriptions, letters, plays and many more. There is a greater focus on spelling rules and grammar in the new curriculum and we teach these through the daily writing lesson as well in separate lessons.

Developing a fluent, cursive writing style is very important and we celebrate the progress children have made in this area through awarding bronze, silver and gold certifiates. When the children are awarded a silver certificate they can start writing using a handwriting pen and when they achieve their gold certificate they can write using a fountain pen. To see the award criteria please see the attached sheet.

Spelling

We use the Super Spelling scheme at Fulfen. Your child will bring home a booklet with spellings individually chosen to be at the correct challenge for your child. Usually children will be learning 5 or 10 spellings at a time and will be tested on them within a 2 week period. It is vitally important that your child brings in their spelling booklet every day as spelling tests will happen throughout the week. Please support your child by helping them to learn their spellings. Please see the parent booklet for more information.
